Trendy Transitions

More than 25 percent of adults in New Jersey’s Middlesex and Mercer counties are obese. For these patients who live and work in Princeton Medical Center’s backyard, bariatric surgery can be the first step to living a longer, healthier life. But the surgery is just the first step.

After bariatric surgery, patients drop weight—and clothing size—rapidly, and maintaining a well-fitting wardrobe during that time of change can be costly. Trendy Transitions is a free clothing exchange program that assists patients with the cost burden of purchasing new clothes until their weight stabilizes. Patients who have already lost weight following surgery donate clothes that no longer fit, allowing other patients a chance to pick up temporary wardrobes on their weight-loss journey.

Trendy Transitions was created by Donna Post, bariatric Coordinator at PMC, with assistance from participants of Community Options Inc., a local organization that provides employment opportunities to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and traumatic brain injury. In 2018, PMC volunteer Steven Barnett, who spent five decades working in New York’s garment district, took over the operation of Trendy Transitions and brought it to a new level of excellence. The impact of Trendy Transitions goes beyond Bariatrics. Unused items are donated to other charities, including Lupus Foundation, Veterans groups, Dress for Success, local churches, and nursing homes.
