While some people prepared for COVID-19 by stocking up on food, many underserved Philadelphians did not have that luxury. Perelman School of Medicine student Eden Engel-Rebitzer created the One Extra Bag program to help tackle this growing need in the nation’s tenth hungriest county. Using donations and grant funds, volunteers purchased weekly groceries for home-bound patients. For program participants like Evelyn Jones, the benefits went far past having their fridges filled—they also built lasting personal relationships with their assigned students.
